The purpose of a weather seal is to keep cold air from entering through the cracks around the garage door. In addition, weather seals, or weatherstripping, keeps insects and critters out of the garage. By weatherproofing a poorly sealed garage, you can keep your garage cleaner, save on your energy bill and stay warmer through the winter.
1: Snow and Rain
Precipitation hits every part of the garage door. Rain, snow, and sleet can come in from a poorly sealed top, bottom, or side seal. Subsequently, this can create a hazardous condition from frozen water melting and re-freezing, damage things stored inside the garage, and in general make a mess.
2: Leaves and Debris
No one likes extra cleaning. Leaves and debris can come in under the bottom of a poorly sealed garage door, making a mess inside your garage.
3: Rodents and Critters
Squirrels, rats, and mice have collapsible bodies. They can get under a faulty bottom seal and set up nests in cars, especially inactive cars. This is one of the reasons why garage door weatherproofing is necessary.
4: Bugs
Flying and crawling insects, such as ants, termites, and wasps, can get into a poorly sealed garage from all sides and build nests. Obvious hazards arise.
5: Last but not least, cold air
With the winter season coming on, cold winds can surge into the garage from all directions. Therefore, leading to a drafty and colder garage that can make adjoining living space harder to heat efficiently. It is ideal not to have a garage door with poor seals during the winter months.
This may be the best time to inspect your garage door seals! By weatherproofing your garage door now, you can save on energy costs later.
