The Problem
Unfinished tasks and decision fatigue keep your mind “at work” after hours. As good stewards of our time, we want to maximize productivity. The fix: a simple shutdown ritual that creates psychological closure and protects your off-hours.
Try This 4-Step Ritual (5 – 15 minutes) Every Day
1) Jot 1–5 goals for tomorrow: include unfinished items, pending decisions, and needed conversations. Writing gives your brain permission to pause.
2) Pick the next task: choose the most important thing you’ll do tomorrow. This turns “to-do chaos” into a clear starting point and creates focus.
3) Declare the day done: physically shut your laptop, put away tools, or say out loud, “I’m done for today.” This signals closure.
4) (Optional) Pair it with a 10 – 20 minute cool-down: a short walk, light exercise, quiet reflection, or prayer.
Quick Tips
Avoid “one more thing,” don’t stop mid-problem, and skip passive scrolling until you’ve completed the ritual. Try it for one workweek; you will notice less evening rumination and better presence with family.
