Do you need to buy garage door torsion springs? Winding bars for your garage door are an often-overlooked part of a torsion spring replacement job, but they are vital. Ratchet handles, tire irons, jack handles, or other tools cannot safely and effectively take their place.
We do not automatically include winding bars in your torsion spring order. However, DDM sells the standard 18″, 1/2″ diameter garage door winding bars for $10.00 for a pair. Hexagonal ends and longer/wider bars are available. If you live in a rural or downtown location, or do not have convenient access to cut and refined 1/2″ steel rod, it’s a great idea to include these with your order.
If you can obtain a steel rod conveniently and have machining access, you can get the bars ready while your order is shipping. Then you’ll be all set for the job. Home centers and steel dealers are good places to pick up the rods.
Either way, be sure to read all safety concerns associated with torsion spring work.
Safer and easier alternatives to using winding bars include the Torsion Spring Safe-T-Winder and the Arrow Tru-Line S3 Winder.
