Garage door extension springs, though not containing the massive energy stored in garage door torsion springs, are still dangerous. You want as much on your side as possible when opening and closing the door on a daily basis. This is why we recommend extension spring safety cables.
Doors dating back 30 or more years did not have these available, but since installers and technicians respected extension spring power, they sometimes used bailing wire to run through them. Now extension spring safety cables are your best bet to contain spring parts in the event of a spring break. A good investment if you do not have them.
DDM offers these cables by the pair at $10.00 for seven-foot high doors and $12.00 for eight-foot high doors.
In addition, we offer a helpful video and an accompanying blog post on how to install the safety cables. We also have other blog posts with more information about garage door cables.
