Since most homes utilize a standard garage door torsion spring system, I decided to discuss torsion springs first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the garage door spring<\/a> breaks with the characteristic bang, and you call DDM, we use questions like the ones below in order to help customers toward a timely and cost-effective repair:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Have you taken measurements on the existing springs?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This is the most common way to identify and match springs for a sound replacement. There are a few rare cases where the wire size and length are printed on the spring and visible, but most will have to be measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Did you measure both springs?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We cannot overstate this. There is about a 30% mismatch of torsion springs on a two-spring system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. What are the door’s dimensions and weight?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This helps us with getting the right lift for your door. If you have a specially constructed door, or an older, wooden model, it is conceivable, you may need a lift and\/or cycle life upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. How did you arrive at the measurements?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Like an official in football may call for a review, sometimes measurements need review. Surprisingly, calipers are not the most accurate way to determine the wire size. We recommend a 10- and 20-coil measurement to get it right. You can determine the inside diameters mostly from the information on the cones. Tape measurements must be carefully done–this means removing slack in the tape and ensuring that the joint at the beginning of the tape is not wavering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
