During the 2010 Christmas holiday, DDM<\/a> asks, “What do you think about when you tie your shoes?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chances are, if you have had tie-able shoes for some years, your thoughts would probably be about what the next activity is. Actions that are repeated time after time become automatic and require little or no thought for most people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Christmas time, Carols, songs, stories, cards, and the like can get to the overload point very quickly. In these moments, it’s easy to think about the artist and the style, and not about the content of what we are taking in. For example, Bing Crosby singing “Adeste Fideles” can be more about remembering Bing, some distant holiday memory, or even a time you heard “O Come, All Ye Faithful” stirringly performed at church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Christmas Story<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Recently during a long ride in a vehicle, I put on an audio copy of the Christmas Story at Luke chapter 1<\/a> and the following chapters in the Bible. The story hit me like I’d just heard it the first time. One of the things I noticed was the tendency to sing among all the players in the Christmas story. But there was something that moved them to sing–namely joy. Deeply felt joy moved the mouths of Mary, Zacharias, Elizabeth, and Simeon in skillful artistry to their Creator for sending His Son to earth at last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
