The Safe-T-Winder\u2122 is a <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/2022\/11\/15\/the-ddm-torsion-spring-safe-t-winder\/\">new type of winder<\/a> that winds standard torsion springs without the use of winding bars, by turning the end of the shaft. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harborfreight.com\/20v-cordless-12-in-drilldriver-tool-only-56725.html\">power drill<\/a> is all you need. Replacing garage door torsion springs is dangerous because the springs are under tension. If you do not use the right tools and follow safe procedures, you could lose hands, limbs or even your life. You could also damage property. There you will find <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/diy-instructions\/how-to-install-a-single-torsion-spring-assembly.php\">instructions for installing one torsion spring<\/a> and another for replacing two springs on the page titled <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/diy-instructions\/replace-garage-door-torsion-springs.php\">How to Replace Garage Door Torsion Springs<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your next step will depend on whether or not the torsion spring shaft on your door has <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/parts\/part\/COU-100H.html\">a coupler<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hollow-shaft-without-coupler\">Hollow Shaft Without Coupler<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If your shaft does not have a coupler, then follow these instructions before you install the Safe-T-Winder\u2122. Also the edge of the cable stop should not be pointing to the side. The cable tip should fit completely inside the drum, with the rounded part facing out so the tip can't scrape the end bearing plate.\" class=\"wp-image-6002\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/diy-instructions\/cable-installation.php\">Install the second cable<\/a> to the second cable drum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Push the drum against the end bearing. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since you already secured the first cable drum to the shaft, you will need to have the second one in position before securing it to the shaft as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn the drum to tighten the cable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, secure the cable drum to the shaft<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-solid-shaft-with-coupler\">Solid Shaft With Coupler<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a solid shaft with a coupler, then follow these instructions before installing the winder. See step 13 below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li>Once you have secured the winder, unwind the shaft by one quarter-turn in order to loosen the cables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uninstall the cables you installed in the previous steps. This will allow the shaft to wind the springs without opening the door.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now that the winder is secured to the shaft, it should be safe to remove the vise grips.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Vise-grip-the-shaft-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Vise-grip-the-shaft-1.jpg\" alt=\"Do not remove the vise grips until you have securely installed the winder, so that the shaft does not fly loose\" class=\"wp-image-5988\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stretch-the-torsion-springs\">Stretch the Torsion Springs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have installed the Safe-T-Winder\u2122, you will need to stretch the springs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"7\">\n<li>First, secure the stationary cones of both springs to the center bracket.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"8\">\n<li>Stretch each spring the distance of one coil for every turn of spring tension. Then add 1\/4&#8243; and secure the winding cones. For example, if you are winding the springs 10 turns, measure the width of 10 coils and add 1\/4&#8243; to the dimension. If you have .250 wire, as an example, (10 coils)x(.250)+(1\/4&#8243;)=2.75. The total stretch should be 2.75 inches.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Measuring-the-width-of-ten-coils.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"298\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Measuring-the-width-of-ten-coils.jpg\" alt=\"Using Masking Tape to Measure the Width of Ten Torsion Spring Coils\" class=\"wp-image-5997\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"9\">\n<li>Mark this distance from the end of each cone to set the stretch on your springs. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After that, secure the torsion spring set screws.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Loosening-the-Set-Screws-on-a-Torsion-Spring.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Loosening-the-Set-Screws-on-a-Torsion-Spring.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6021\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-winding-the-springs\">Winding the Springs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To wind springs using the Safe-T-Winder\u2122, the only tool you need is a drill and a 7\/16&#8243; socket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"11\">\n<li>First, be sure to mark the shaft so you can count the number of turns on your springs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the drill to counterclockwise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If all three set screws have not all been tightened, use the winder to turn the shaft and winder hub.
