Therefore, it is important to install push down spring bumpers <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/02\/when-are-leaf-bumpers-and-push-down-bumper-springs-necessary\/\">when it is necessary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without this extra thrust, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/11\/garage-door-cables\/\">cables<\/a> are likely to peel off the <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/parts\/cable_drums.html\">cable drums<\/a> as the opener initially turns the torsion shaft, especially if the rollers are dry or if the door binds in the open position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tested the amount of force required to compress the <a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/parts\/part\/RS-27.html\">27-inch spring bumper<\/a> by standing on an analog scale and seeing how much weight I lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2018\/06\/push-bumper-installation-77.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2018\/06\/push-bumper-installation-77-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A garage door professional testing the compression on a 27-inch spring bumper by using an analog scale.\" class=\"wp-image-2542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2018\/06\/push-bumper-installation-77-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ddmgaragedoors.com\/blog\/uploads\/2018\/06\/push-bumper-installation-77.jpg 711w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I weigh about 160 with my tool pouch. That is too much. Over time it will create excessive wear on the opener, and it could also damage the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than compress the bumper all the way, it is safer to limit the compression to 1\/3 of the rod length. The bracket mounts to the outside of the horizontal track as pictured. If it doesn&#8217;t open all the way, measure the length of compression. If it is less than one third the length of the rod, adjust the opener force just enough to get the door to open completely. To do this, mark the necessary distance needed for moving the bumper. Should the nut come loose in the future, the bracket will not move. To increase quietness, lube the entire length of the rod with a 40 weight oil or light grease.
